Gear materials and processing

1. The choice of gear material

(1) Gears should be made of suitable materials according to the conditions of use. The choice of gear materials has a direct impact on the performance and service life of the gears.

(2) Medium-carbon steel and low- and medium-carbon alloy steel are selected for general gears.

(3) Nitrided steel can be used for important gears with higher requirements, and non-transmitting gears can also be made of cast iron, cloth bakelite or nylon.

2. Choose the right gear blank

(1) The rough forms of gears mainly include bars, forgings and castings. Bars are used for gears with small size, simple structure and low strength requirements.

(2) Forgings are often used when gears require high strength, wear resistance and impact resistance.

(3) Gears with too large diameter are often cast blanks. In order to reduce the amount of cutting, gear teeth can be directly cast for large-sized, low-precision gears.

(4) For small-sized and complex-shaped gears, new processes such as precision casting, pressure casting, precision forging, powder metallurgy, hot rolling and cold extrusion can be used to produce gear blanks with gear teeth to increase labor and save raw materials.

3. The general process of gear processing is as follows:

1. Tooth blanks-casting and forging methods can be used to make tooth blanks according to different requirements, and round bars can also be used to make them directly.

2. Heat treatment-remove the internal stress of the blank.

3. Tooth blank turning processing can be divided into rough and fine processing. .

4. Gear hobbing or gear shaping.

5. Shaving processing

6. Tooth surface heat treatment is generally surface quenching.

7. Grind or grind teeth.
