Product Description

4140 Steel is a highly versatile material that is widely used in the manufacturing industry. It is an alloy steel that contains chromium, molybdenum, and manganese, making it highly resistant to wear and tear, as well as offering good toughness, strength, and fatigue resistance.

4140 steel Machining can be challenging due to its high hardness and toughness, but with the right equipment and expertise, it is a reliable material to work with. When machining 4140 steel parts, it is crucial to use the proper cutting tools, coolant, and techniques to ensure the best results.

There are many different types of parts that can be machined from 4140 steel. Some examples include gears, bolts, shafts, and tooling components. These parts are commonly used in industries such as automotive, aerospace, military, and oil and gas.

In addition to its toughness and strength properties, 4140 steel can also be heat-treated to improve its performance. Heat-treating allows the material to achieve a wide range of hardness and toughness levels, making it suitable for a variety of applications.

Product Feature

4140 steel, also known as AISI 4140, is a popular grade of steel known for its high strength, toughness and wear resistance. Below are some key characteristics of this type of steel:

1. Chemical Composition:

4140 steel contains 0.38-0.43% carbon, 0.15-0.35% silicon, 0.75-1.00% manganese, 0.80-1.10% chromium, 0.15-0.25% molybdenum and 0.040% phosphorus maximum.

2. Hardness:

The hardness of 4140 steel ranges from 28-32 HRC (Rockwell C hardness).

3. Strength:

4140 steel has a minimum yield strength of 655 MPa (95,000 psi) and a minimum tensile strength of 850 MPa (125,000 psi).

4. Corrosion Resistance:

While 4140 steel is not a completely corrosion-proof material, it does have good corrosion resistance in mild environments.

5. Machinability:

4140 steel is relatively easy to machine compared to other high-strength alloys.

Compared with other types of steel, 4140 steel has the following advantages:

Compared with 1045 steel, 4140 steel has higher strength and hardness, making it more suitable for manufacturing important components.

Compared with 4130 steel, 4140 steel has higher hardness and thermal strength, making it suitable for more stringent applications.

Application

1. The automotive industry makes heavy use of 4140 Steel Machining for the manufacture of critical engine and transmission components such as camshafts, drive shafts, gears, and axles. The high strength and wear resistance of 4140 steel makes it the choice for these parts that are prone to high stress and wear.

2. The aerospace industry also relies heavily on it, particularly for the manufacture of landing gear and other structural components. The material's toughness and high fatigue strength enable it to handle large and sudden loads, making it a crucial component in aviation.

3. In the oil and gas industry, it is commonly used to create drill collars, valves, and other drilling components that must withstand extreme environments and conditions. The material's high strength and corrosion resistance allow it to function effectively in harsh environments and keep the drilling process running smoothly.

4. In the manufacturing industry, 4140 Steel Machining is used to create molds and dies for metal forming and stamping. The hardness and wear resistance of 4140 steel makes it the ideal choice for this application, where high precision and repeatability are crucial.

Moreover, the construction industry also makes use of this material for the manufacture of critical structures like bridges, buildings, and heavy machinery parts. It is particularly useful in situations where structural and load-bearing components must withstand heavy loads and stress.
